Food Shelf Life Testing

Shelf life testing of foods becomes necessary to ensure product quality is maintained during storage and distribution. It is also a regulatory requirement as the FDA makes it illegal to sale adulterated (spoiled) products. PCAS service involve the monitoring of basic chemical and microbiological parameters of products stored under controlled environmental conditions.

The process starts with clients sending to our laboratory 6 individual containers of finished product. This is based on a basic shelf life analysis. Please contact one of our project managers to determine your specific needs.

Our Food Scientists store the samples in a temperature controlled incubators and perform analyses over time under a rigorous quality control program using FDA, USDA and USP recommended methods. Results turn around time ranges from 50 to 100% of the expected shelf life depending on the project.

Microbial Contamination Screen

Food can become contaminated with microorganisms during processing, storage and/or distribution. PCAS uses a “microbial contamination screen” service including the testing of Total Aerobic Plate count, Total Coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella sp., Listeria sp., Staphylococcus aureus, Yeast and Mold.

Additional fees apply for positive Salmonella and Listeria species confirmation. Our experienced Food Microbiologists perform analyses under a quality control program using FDA, USDA and EPA recommended methods.

USP Microbial Screen Testing

Manufacturers of nutraceuticals and dietary supplements are required by to test for the presence of objectionable organisms. PCAS uses a USP Microbial Screen Testing service including the analyses of Aerobic Plate Count, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Total Yeast & Mold Count.

Our experienced Food Microbiologists perform analyses under a quality control program using USP methods.

Bottled Water & Dairy Products Testing Services

The FDA and local Health Departments mandate the manufacturers of bottled water and/or dairy products (e.g. frozen yogurt) to perform an annual product test to validate their quality. This creates a burden on business owners who have to find a qualified laboratory and then drive the samples to the laboratory for testing. PCAS works with each client to set up a testing program. Samples can be shipped in to our laboratory, or we can have one of our field technicians pick up the samples at your local facility.

Bottled water testing can include Total Coliforms count, E.Coli, Metals, Total Dissolved solids and more based on your specific needs. Dairy products service can include testing for Total Coliforms, Yeast and Mold counts and several others.

Pathogen Testing Program

Food manufacturers often need to test for different pathogens as part of their HACCP and/or manufacturing QC programs. PCAS uses a “Pathogen Monitoring” testing program. The program offers the testing of different pathogens like E. coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes or Salmonella spp. Additional fees apply for confirmation of positive Salmonella species.

Our experienced Food Microbiologists perform analyses under a rigorous quality control program using EPA, FDA and/or USDA recommended methods and state-of-the-art equipment.

E.coli O157:H7 Testing

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli that produces an infection leading to hemorrhagic diarrhea and occasional kidney failure. Most illnesses have been associated with eating undercooked contaminated ground beef or vegetables, and swimming in or drinking contaminated water. PCAS provides E.coli O157:H7 testing services.
Our Food Microbiologists perform analyses under a quality control program using FDA and USDA recommended methods.

Listeria Monocytogenes Testing

Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most virulent foodborne pathogens, with 20 to 30 percent of clinical infections resulting in death. It is typically linked with improperly cooked meat and vegetables. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. If the disease spreads to the nervous system, it can cause meningitis, a serious infection of the brain and spinal cord. PCAS provides testing of Listeria monocytogenes.

Salmonella sp. Testing

Salmonella sp. (species) can cause fever, severe diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Onset of symptoms occurs 12 to 72 hours after eating food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The attack generally lasts four to seven days as the body rids the intestines of the bacteria. Main sources of Salmonella sp. are improperly cooked poultry, raw vegetables and seeds. PCAS provides Salmonella sp. testing.
